This unit will provide the learner with the knowledge to understand why a balanced diet is important to labooratory animals and how it is provided.

Introduction to laboratory animal facility legislation (Y/615/1147)

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the ability to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the legislation controlling the use of animals for scientific purposes.

Introduction to laboratory animal science ethics (L/615/1145)

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the ability to demonstrate the
knowledge and understanding of the ethical considerations of usingĀ  animals
for scientific purposes.

Laboratory animal health and husbandry (JJ/602/5883)

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the ability to develop and demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the theory supporting good animal husbandry practice, including how to sex, handle and health check laboratory animals.

Introduction to health and safety principles and legislation (A/618/5100)

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with a basic knowledge and understanding of the legislative requirements for health and safety in the workplace and to introduce basic terms and principles.

This unit is designed to introduce the principles of safety, accident prevention and risk assessment and to encourage learners to follow safe working practices in the animal unit.

Laboratory animal biology (Y/602/6049)

This unit contributes to the IAT Level 2 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology. It forms part of the initial professional qualification for animal technicians. Successful completion allows progression on to the IAT Level 3 qualification.

You may be eligible for exemption from this unit if you have a grade C or higher in GCSE Biology, please let us know of any prior qualification you have that you think might be relevant to this unit.

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively.

This unit is designed to give the learner an understanding of the methods used to convey relevant animal facility information effectively.

Numeracy for animal technicians (D/602/6053)

This unit provides the learner with the ability to develop and demonstrate their ability to use maths effectively.
